Sensor Technology Ltd Launches SGR523 Digital Rotary Torque Sensor with Integrated Angle Encoder

The new SGR523 from Sensor Technology Ltd offers high-precision torque and angular position monitoring for industrial applications. By DA Staff / 15 Apr 2025

Sensor Technology Ltd has introduced the SGR523, a new digital rotary torque sensor featuring an integrated incremental angle encoder. This device, part of the TorqSense SGR series, is designed for precise torque and angular position monitoring in various industrial settings.

The SGR523 employs non-contact strain gauge technology, eliminating the need for traditional slip rings, which enhances its reliability. It includes a high-resolution angle encoder capable of up to 10,000 pulses per revolution, with a resolution of 0.009°. This makes it suitable for applications requiring detailed torque-angle analysis, such as mechanical testing, automated assembly, and process control.

Key features of the SGR523 include a torque measurement range from 175 mNm to 20 Nm, an accuracy of ±0.1%, and a mechanical overload capacity of 400%. It also offers an overrange reading capability of 250% and a digital sample rate of 4000 samples per second. Standard digital outputs are RS232 and USB, with CANbus and Ethernet available as optional outputs. The sensor supports bi-directional angle and rotation counting, and speed measurement up to 9000 RPM. It is compatible with TorqView Advanced Torque Monitoring Software and comes with a lifetime warranty.

The SGR523’s capabilities allow engineers to identify mechanical issues, such as rotational stiction or thread damage, by analyzing torque versus angle plots. This dual-parameter monitoring supports quality assurance in manufacturing processes like bottle cap tightening and bolt fastening.

Furthermore, the sensor’s ability to monitor torque at specific shaft angles assists in detecting potential problems in process control applications, which can reduce production wastage. Its high-resolution angle measurement also enables precise motion control, aiding in the management of inertia in motion platforms and enhancing safety in automated machinery.

The design of the SGR523 integrates both torque and angle measurement into a single unit, which simplifies system architecture by reducing component count and improving system reliability. Its robust construction and advanced diagnostics, including Built-In Test (BIT) self-diagnostics and shaft temperature monitoring, are intended to ensure consistent performance in demanding environments.
