Xsens has announced the release of Xsens Avior, a new lightweight OEM form factor inertial measurement unit (IMU). The Avior, measuring 36.8mm x 40mm, is designed for various industrial and commercial applications, offering improved performance over its predecessor.
The Xsens Avior is suitable for high-volume manufacturing due to its vertical 10×2-pin socket connector, which simplifies board mounting, and its tolerance of any mounting orientation across all three axes. For design integration, the product includes on-board UART, CAN, SPI, and I2C interfaces, with support for RS232 and RS422 via a development kit or external transceiver.
Xsens has incorporated a new generation of sensing components into the Avior, along with advanced analog filtering for increased stability and noise reduction. This results in enhanced performance, with a heading accuracy of 1° RMS and roll and pitch accuracy of 0.2° RMS. The Avior also features improved stability, with an in-run bias stability of 8°/hr for the gyroscope and 15µg for the accelerometer.
Weighing 35.2g, the Xsens Avior is encased in a robust aluminum housing with an IP51 rating and operates within a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. Its compact size, light weight, performance, and robust construction are intended for applications such as:
- Camera/payload stabilization, including SOTM (SATCOM-on-the-Move) devices
- Marine equipment, including remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and sensor buoys
- Mobile robots and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs)
- Drones and 3D mapping and surveying tools
- Humanoid robots
- Industrial control and embedded motion systems
Martina Ravizza, Product Manager at Xsens, stated: “The Xsens Avior gives engineers a flexible, robust, and developer-friendly inertial sensing solution which is ready to scale. Whether an engineer is building a robotic system, autonomous vehicle, stabilized platform, or a smart mobility solution, Xsens Avior is a perfect fit for their design requirements.”
The new sensor is available in three configurations:
- IMU: Provides calibrated inertial sensor data.
- Vertical Reference Unit (VRU): Delivers accurate, calibrated values for roll and pitch, along with unreferenced yaw data.
- Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS): Offers accurate, calibrated roll and pitch values, and heading data referenced to true North.
The Xsens Avior is available with a hardware development kit and includes free software development kits that support C#/C++, Python, ROS 1, ROS 2, and Matlab environments, as well as comprehensive documentation and integration guides.
Key product specifications include:
- Typical power consumption: <0.5W
- Maximum output data rate: 400Hz
- Gyroscope full range: ±300°/s
- Accelerometer full range: ±8 g
- Magnetometer full range: ±8 G
- Fully supported in the MT Software Suite development environment
- Certifications: CE, FCC, RoHS, ITAR free
The Xsens Avior motion sensor is globally available through Xsens and its authorized partners.
